Experience the Pixar animated adventure

The Incredibles is a free-to-play action game from Heavy Iron Studios, released in the same year as the Pixar animated film that inspired it. You follow the titular family of superheroes trying to live a quiet life in the suburbs. However, they are forced back into service, this time including the kids, in order to save the world.

Featuring full 3D graphics plus cutscenes lifted directly from the animated film, this reinterpretation of The Incredible is a fun experience for Pixar fans, although it does little to expand the world built by the source material, like Tarzan: Guardian of Earth.

Save the world as a family

As an adaptation, The Incredibles has a premise that closely follows its source material. Essentially, you play as different members of the Incredibles family as you try to track down and defeat villains. From their old foes like Bomb Voyage to new ones such as the hijacked Omnidroids and ultimately, the movie villain Syndrome himself. Almost everyone in the Parr family is playable, aside from the baby Jack-Jack.

While video game graphics in 2004 are admittedly dated, the overall game design does a good job. It balances the cartoon appeal that Pixar movies consistently offer with an action-packed superhero game. As for the audio, not all original actors reprise their roles for the game, although a good part of the cutscenes are directly taken from the movie. Similarly, sound effects and backgrounds add value to the experience.

Technically speaking, there’s not a lot of issues with the game aside from its dated visuals. Story-wise, however, it just feels like a loose retelling of what was already offered by the source material. There are no new characters and the game-only original missions are bland at best. Additionally, the combat feels sloppy and is easily cheesed, even up until the late game.

A classic superhero flick, in video game format

By modern standards, the 2004 The Incredibles game is good only for nostalgia, or a casual gaming session after viewing this Pixar classic franchise. It gives players a more active part in the telling of the Parr family’s adventures, playing as Mr. Incredible, Mrs. Incredible, Violet, and Dash at different parts of the game. However, by not adopting its own story, it easily runs out of value to offer.

PROS

  • Full 3D graphics
  • Uses cutscenes from the movie
  • Offers a variety of playable characters

CONS

  • Doesn’t introduce new story elements
  • Combat is sloppy
